5 Common Mistakes That Halt Muscle Hypertrophy

Why You Might Be Stuck at a Plateau

Consistency is necessary, but consistency with flawed execution only cements suboptimal habits. If you've been working hard without proportional results, examine these five blindspots.

  1. Training too far from true failure: Leaving 4-5 reps in reserve on every set gives insufficient mechanical tension to trigger recruitment of high-threshold motor units.
  2. Ignoring the eccentric phase: Dropping weights without controlling the 2-3 second lowering phase eliminates the most hypertrophic stimulus of the repetition.
  3. Excessive program hopping: Changing your routine every two weeks prevents neurological adaptations and measurable progressive overload.
  4. Inadequate caloric and sleep support: You cannot synthesize muscle from fresh air and 5 hours of broken sleep.
  5. Sacrificing range of motion for ego weights: Half-reps build half-results. Train through full active joint ranges.
