Beginner's Guide to Strength Training: Cut Through the Noise
Foundations Come Before Fancy Variations
Entering a serious strength gym for the first time can feel overwhelming. With hundreds of machines, cable towers, and racks, what actually moves the needle? The answer has not changed in a century: mastery of basic human movement patterns.
The Big Five Movement Patterns
- The Squat: Goblet squat progressing to Barbell Back/Front squat.
- The Hinge: Romanian Deadlift, Trap Bar Deadlift, and Conventional Pulls.
- The Push: Overhead Military Press and Dumbbell/Barbell Bench Press.
- The Pull: Strict Pull-ups, Chest-Supported Rows, and Barbell Rows.
- The Carry: Heavy Farmer's Walks and Suitcase Carries for core rigidity.
The Law of Progressive Overload
If you lift the exact same weights for the exact same reps every month, your body has zero physiological incentive to adapt. Keep a detailed logbook. Aim to add either 1 rep or 1.25kg to the bar every single week.
